Learning Outcomes and Application | This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to set up, adjust and maintain industrial sewing machines used in a textile enterprise. The unit of competency applies to setting up industrial sewing machines for production, conducting sample runs, problem solving, repair, adjustment, preventative maintenance and testing of machines to ensure efficient working order. The unit covers operator controlled single station industrial sewing machines and high volume automatic and manually operated hem, selvedge and embroidery sewing machines.Discretion and judgement may be required, for both self and others, in planning and selecting processes, procedures or outcomes.This unit does not cover all maintenance, repair and adjustment functions associated with industrial sewing machines. In particular, skills associated with general engineering (fitting), electrical and electronic systems, and fluid power systems, may be required according to the nature of the set-up, repair or adjustment, and the workplace practices of a particular enterprise.Work may be conducted in a variety of environments, such as operational workplace activities, restricted space, hazardous, controlled or exposed conditions.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. | ||
Duration and Setting | X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting. Assessors must: satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment, as set by the VET regulator have vocational competency in setting up, adjusting and maintaining industrial sewing machines, at least to the level being assessed, with relevant industry knowledge and experience. Assessment should occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible, or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment reflecting realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills. Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate. Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications associated with this unit. |
